YOGA

Hatha Yoga - Mixed Levels Private Instruction also available

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yug, which means "to yoke or harness" as in the yoking and uniting of mind and body, and of individual and universal consciousness. Hatha yoga (forceful yoga) refers to a vast area of doctrines and practices concerned with harnessing the current of life force (prana) circulating throughout the human body.

Focusing this innate life force and preventing its dissipation are said to awaken the body's dormant psychospiritual energy. This body-oriented approach to transcendence involves cleansing practices, postures, and breath control.

ASHTANGA

Ashtanga Yoga is the name given to the system of hatha yoga currently taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, a renowned Sanskrit scholar and yogi in Mysore, India. However, the historical definition of ashtanga yoga is "eight-limbed yoga" as originally outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras.

Written between 400 and 200 B.C., the Yoga Sutras is the primary text of the science of classical yoga in which Patanjali collated and systemized existing techniques and knowledge of yoga.

The path of yogic maturation consists of the following eight limbs or practices: Yama (moral observance)Niyama (inner integrity) Asana (postures) Pranayama (breath control) Pratyahara (sensory withdrawal) Dharana (concentration) Dhyana (meditation)
Samadhi (contemplation).

KUNDALINI YOGA
w/Saram Singh

What is Kundalini Yoga? Kundalini is the science of changing and strengthening the life energy of the human to give expanded life and capacity. You experience it when the energy of the glandular system combines with the nervous system to create such a sensitivity that the brain of the practicing person becomes totally and wholly aware. Kundalini is called the yoga of awareness. All yoga's end up raising the kundalini in the person so that a complete physical mental and spiritual balance is achieved. The natural result is a universal consciousness and to achieve universal consciousness through any method you have to raise your kundalini. When Life force is strengthened and projected outward all darkness will go away. When this pure soul energy opens up the heart man/woman becomes divine. A being must understand their existence in relationship to the universe. Whoever understands this relation of the universe to the self will know the truth of the self. I am , I am, I am is the kundalini mantra and practice of the kriyas will rapidly bring you to practical experience of infinity. The unfolding of what you already are. A divine being operating at their fullest potential.

Saram Singh has been practicing and teaching yoga for 8 years. A certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor, Saram has also studied Yogic Numerology for 3 years. He has worked with groups and individuals in recovery from drug abuse and eating disorders. Saram graduated in studies of World Religious Traditions and currently participates in many healing traditions as student and practitioner. An accomplished musician, Reiki healer, and professional grower Saram uses his attentiveness and intuition to connect with the group and deliver a creative, transformational experience. His instruction in Kundalini Yoga came directly from the Master Yogi Bhajan. Every person in the class no matter where they were at the moment was touched, included and opened up.

Kung Fu with Sifu Hannibal

Most people think of martial arts as simply self-defense against physical attack.  Kung Fu is a style of martial arts that coordinates mental, physical and spiritual aspects of fighting. It has many healing properties.  Here at Sacred Space we use Kung Fu not just as a self-defense technique, but a healing art as well.  Martial arts in general, as well as Kung Fu in particular, is the missing link to the healing that most people are looking for. Most people live in fear and with anxiety. Fear is something that most people go to sleep with each night. It has been reinforced in them as they watch the evening news. Some people respond when presented with martial arts that they are "not violent". However, our bodies have an immune system which is our innate fighting force. We have within us what are called "killer white cells". They are responsible to seek out and attack disease causing bacteria as well as cancer cells.  When we practice building up our external ability to defend ourselves, we also build up our internal immune system. Only people who are fearful or insecure react in violent ways. Martial arts prevents the incidents of fights by building up one's self confidence to defend oneself.

We are very fortunate to have as our instructor,  Sifu Hannibal. He is the first student of the oldest Kung Fu school in the U.S.  (Hung Sing). Sifu Hannibal not only covers the physical aspects of self-defense, but the mental and spiritual aspects as well. It is much more than just about fighting.
